Effects of Social Skill Training on the Interpersonal Relationship, Assertiveness and Quality of Life in Chronic Schizophrenic Inpatients


Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Social Skill Training on the interpersonal relationship, assertiveness and quality of life in chronic schizophrenic inpatients.
The forty-eight schizophrenic inpatients by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) were sampled from one private mental hospital from July 12th, 1998 to October 30th, 1999.
They were randomly divided into two groups an experimental group of twenty-five and control group of twenty-three individuals.
The social skill training for experimental subjects were conducted by the investigator for 5-10 subjects at a time for 12 series, twice a week for 6 weeks.
The results were as follows
1. For the change of interpersonal relationship score between two groups, there was a significant difference between two groups. In experimental group, the score of satisfaction, trust and openness was increased after treatment, but, there was not a significant difference in control group. The score of sensitivity was decreased in both groups with no significant difference between two groups. The change of understanding score was significantly different between two groups.
2. The assertive behavior was significantly increased after treatment in the experimental group, however, there were no significant differences in control group.
Therefore, there were significant differences in the change of the assertive behavior scores between two groups.
3. The quality of life was significantly improved after treatment in the experimental group, with significant differences between two groups.

In the light of these results, Social Skill Training may be effective nursing intervention method to improve the interpersonal relationship, assertiveness and quality of life for chronic schizophrenic inpatients.
